Ari Hoenig Trio
March 13 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Ari Hoenig Trio is a world-renowned jazz trio consisting of drummer Ari Hoenig, pianist Gadi Lehavi, and bassist Ben Tiberio. Known for their extraordinary synergy and fearless improvisational approach, the trio combines technical mastery with boundless creativity.
Ari Hoenig is a jazz drummer, composer and educator known for his unusual and intense approach to drumming, which emphasizes complex rhythms in direct harmony with other group members. Hoenig is widely noted particularly for his drumming not being relegated to just keeping tempo, or being a side issue to the music he plays in, but rather for elevating drumming as an indispensable part of the performance. Hoenig is also known for his unique ability to modify the pitch of a drum by using drum sticks, mallets, and even parts of his body (such as his hands and elbows). Using this technique, he can play any note in the chromatic scale, virtually any melody, and even improvise on a chord structure in the same way as any other instrumentalist would.
Hoenig has recorded, written, and produced 14 CDs as a leader. Hoenig has co-led various groups with Chris Potter, Edmar Casteneda, JD Walter, and Dan Weiss. He has also performed or recorded with Shirley Scott, Jean Michel Pilc, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner, Joshua Redman, Wayne Krantz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Richard Bona, Chris Potter, Toots Thielemans, Pat Martino, and Billy Childs. Currently, his group tours the world and performs regularly at the legendary New York jazz club Smalls.
As an educator, Hoenig teaches privately and is on faculty at New York University and the New School for Social Research in New York. He gives clinics and lectures at music schools and universities worldwide, and he writes a regular educational column for Modern Drummer magazine.
